We have a rich toolset of high profile GIS algorithms available, in fact we are also co-developing a GIS system. This page illustrates some examples of our analytical work.
The map shows the aggregated astronomical insolation time in hours of the second week of a year in Northern Italy (Garda Lake). The map is terrain-shaded to deliver an impression of the complex geomorphometry in the area. The calculation was performed in the open source software GRASS GIS (http://grass.osgeo.org/) and is based on a high resolution elevation digital model (5m x 5m) derived from Lidar scanning by airplane. The insolation algorithm takes terrain shadows into account, cloud cover could be optionally considered.
